Potatoes New Zealand represents the interests of New Zealand's seed, table, and process potato growers. Its mission is "To foster and advance the interests of New Zealand potato growers". To do this, Potatoes New Zealand has committees that focus on research, promotion, market access, and seed potato certification. Around 290 growers are involved in the industry, producing an estimated 500,000 tonnes of potatoes from 10,500 hectares in 2006. The bulk of this production is consumed domestically; however exports of processed and fresh potatoes are continuing to increase. The value of potatoes at farm gate is $111 million, and $360 million at retail level. Potatoes are New Zealand's 4th largest horticulture export industry ($70 million in 2006). |
