TENTH Weekly update on psyllid traps for 2012
Below are links to the graphs and data tables for the National Psyllid Monitoring Programme.
Status as at 17th February 2012.
No psyllids were detected on traps in Northland for the week ending 3rd February. Psyllid numbers at Pukekohe site A have continued to increase slightly from an average count 11 TPP/trap (3rd Feb) to 14 TPP/trap on the 10th Feb. One of the traps at this site recorded 36 TPP. Psyllid counts from site C have also increased from an average of 8 TPP/trap (10th Feb) to around 14 TPP/trap (17th Feb). Psyllid counts at the Waikato site presently average less than 6 TPP/trap. Data for 3 new sites in the Ohakune area has just become available and monitoring data from the 6th January indicates a low presence of psyllid at these sites. Overall psyllid numbers for the Ohakune area average less than 2 TPP/trap. Levels in Hawkes Bay continue to remain low (no data was received from Site A for this week’s reporting period). Psyllid numbers at the Manawatu A site decreased slightly to an average of less than 4 TPP/trap, site B remains at less than 1 TPP/trap. In the South Island, total trap counts from Mid and South Canterbury sites show psyllid levels range from 0 to 26 TPP per site - a more detailed breakdown of psyllid numbers per individual trap for these regions will be reported when this data becomes available. Overall, psyllid numbers for all regions remain at lower levels than previous years.
See most recent data tables and graphs.
Each week Potatoes New Zealand reports on the number of tomato potato psyllids (TPP) and other species of psyllids in the psyllid traps to help growers monitor and control for the potato tomato psyllid. Traps are localed in Pukekohe, Waikato, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, North Canterbury, Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury. Numbers of tomato potato psyllids (TPP) and other species of psyllids are reported.

Press release: From the Paddock to the Packet Field Day on the 2nd March 2012
From the Paddock to the Packet Field Day – 2 March 2012
Raymond and Adrianne Bowan will open Fallgate Farm and their Heartland Potato Chip factory to the rural community to show how innovation helped them turn well grown potatoes into great tasting chips.
Lincoln University Foundation chairman Neil Taylor expects many people from throughout the South Island and potato growers from around the country to attend the field day.
“The Field Day is an opportunity for all farmers, especially growers, to learn how the Bowan’s commitment to innovation on an ongoing basis enabled them to achieve their dreams through complete vertical integration,” says Mr Taylor.
Raymond Bowan says those attending the Field Day will get to see how both the farms and the factory operate, hear about our farm management style, our innovative practices, production levels and profitability.
“We see the Field Day as a chance to give back to everyone who has helped us over the years. Hopefully it will also inspire others to focus on using innovation to grow their own business.”
From the Paddock to the Packet Field Day starts at 9:45am on 2 March 2012 at Fallgate Farm, 42 Milton Road, Orari, South Canterbury. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP jan.latham@lincoln.ac.nz by 27 February.
During the day buses will take attendees to the Heartland Potato Chip factory which is 30 minutes away in Washdyke before returning to the farm.
The Lincoln University Foundation South Island Farmer of the Year competition is the South Island’s premier farming competition. Preparation for this year’s competition is underway and farmers who are able to demonstrate how innovation has improved their farming operations are asked to enter.
