NEXT I’s of Potatoes meeting

NEXT I’s of Potatoes meeting
Palmerston North

Potatoes New Zealand (PNZ) identifies younger people in the potato industry (generally under 40) to give them opportunities to meet together and discuss issues of interest.

We wish to engage not just with those in growing enterprises but with all younger folk who have an interest in the potato industry.

This is a crucial part of our Leadership & Training programme and fits with PNZ’s purpose of providing leadership in the areas of sustainability, industry profile and communication.

Why “I’s of Potatoes”?
PNZ’s values are to behave in a way that;

  • is INCLUVSIVE
  • provides INSPIRATION
  • demonstrates INTEGRITY

That is what we want to achieve with young people in the industry.

For more information about this event contact Ron Gall.

Psyllid

Monitoring psyllid

Monitoring psyllid can be difficult. The adults, which look like tiny cicadas, are only 2-3 millimetres long. However, regular monitoring for psyllid is essential for effective control.

We recommend two types of monitoring:

  • Using yellow sticky traps to indicate when adults are prevalent. Unfortunately not enough is yet known to establish control thresholds.
  • Inspecting plants (particularly the lower third of stems and leaves) to gauge the numbers and life stages of psyllid. This information can then be used to decide on controls.

If you would like help monitoring psyllid on your crops, or would like information on how to do this yourself, these people may be able to help: Tim Herman (Hawkes Bay, 027 490 3359) and John Thompson (Auckland, 027 493 0199). Please be aware there will be a fee involved.

Monitoring is being carried out as part of MAF's Sustainable Farming Fund project at sites across New Zealand. This data, along with the latest information on psyllid monitoring, is presented below.

2011-12 Psyllid Monitoring Data: update 17th February 2012

Below are links to the graphs and data tables for the National Psyllid Monitoring Programme.

Status as at 17th February 2012.

No psyllids were detected on traps in Northland for the week ending 3rd February. Psyllid numbers at Pukekohe site A have continued to increase slightly from an average count 11 TPP/trap (3rd Feb) to 14 TPP/trap on the 10th Feb. One of the traps at this site recorded 36 TPP. Psyllid counts from site C have also increased from an average of 8 TPP/trap (10th Feb) to around 14 TPP/trap (17th Feb). Psyllid counts at the Waikato site presently average less than 6 TPP/trap. Data for 3 new sites in the Ohakune area has just become available and monitoring data from the 6th January indicates a low presence of psyllid at these sites. Overall psyllid numbers for the Ohakune area average less than 2 TPP/trap. Levels in Hawkes Bay continue to remain low (no data was received from Site A for this week’s reporting period). Psyllid numbers at the Manawatu A site decreased slightly to an average of less than 4 TPP/trap, site B remains at less than 1 TPP/trap. In the South Island, total trap counts from Mid and South Canterbury sites show psyllid levels range from 0 to 26 TPP per site - a more detailed breakdown of psyllid numbers per individual trap for these regions will be reported when this data becomes available. Overall, psyllid numbers for all regions remain at lower levels than previous years.

For more information please contact Psyllid Coordinator Stephen Ogden.
All the data from the last 2 seasons of psyllid monitoring is available below.
