Exports
In the year to June 2009, just over 102,000 tonnes were sold to overseas markets - a sum that represented a quarter of New Zealand's potato crop.
Around three quarters of that was sold as frozen potato products (75,614 tonnes), with most of that tonnage made up of french fries. View more export statistics.
It's not always easy getting our potatoes - especially fresh potatoes - into markets because most countries have strict phytosanitary and compliance requirements, so Potatoes New Zealand runs an active market access programme. We also help our growers meet each country's compliance requirements through promoting food safety programmes such as New Zealand GAP (Good Agricultural Practice). NZ GAP is benchmarked to the world retailers' association's Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and GLOBALGAP.
